Holbox is approximately 27 miles long and 1 mile wide, and is separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon that is home to flamingos, pelicans and other rich birdlife. It turns a simple walk on the beach into an unforgettable experience.

The Story of Mawimbi

The story of Mawimbi is the story of Onny and Carmelo’s journey around the world, and the beautiful home they built together in Isla Holbox, México over 25 years ago. Ornella & Carmelo

Ornella and Carmelo have journeyed all around the world. After visiting Seychelles, Maldives, Thailand, Caribbean, Greek Islands, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Botswana, they finally found their ultimate paradise and created a small tropical-style hideout.

When they began building Hotel Mawimbi in 1998, they were excited to bring to life all of the most beautiful experiences they enjoyed during their travels.

They used the magnificent local wood to build their dream home, and decorated the hotel with artistic crafts from local artisans, carefully blending modern amenities with authentic Méxican textures.

Many years later, Ornella and Carmelo still reside in this remote spot, enjoying the simplicity of island life and its wonderful nature. Sharing this experience with curious travelers has become their way of life.
