Discover Holbox
Holbox, which means Black Hole in the Yucatec Mayan language, is part of the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, Mexico’s largest ecological preserve.
Located off the north-eastern tip of the Yucatán peninsula in México, Isla Holbox is the only island in the Caribbean that has more than 40 km of unspoiled beaches.
Holbox is approximately 27 miles long and 1 mile wide, and is separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon that is home to flamingos, pelicans and other rich birdlife. It turns a simple walk on the beach into an unforgettable experience.
Whale Sharks
Swimming with whale sharks on Isla Holbox is an awe-inspiring adventure, offering a unique opportunity to get close to the largest fish in the ocean.
This unforgettable experience leaves visitors with a deep appreciation for marine conservation and the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems.
Bioluminescence
On moonless nights, the waters in some areas of the island shimmer and sparkle thanks to bioluminescent plankton, creating an enchanting display that feels almost otherworldly.
As you wade or kayak through the warm, shallow waters, every movement triggers a burst of luminescence, illuminating your path and surrounding you in a surreal, glowing aura.
Cabo Catoche
The Cabo Catoche excursion is a captivating journey to one of the Yucatán Peninsula’s most pristine and untouched areas. During your adventure, you’re likely to encounter a variety of marine life, including the chance to snorkel with colorful fish and curious sea turtles. You’ll also go bottom-fishing with hand-lines, and the Captain will use the boat’s catch to prepare the freshest ceviche you’ve ever tasted as you wander a virgin beach.

This tour typically includes transportation, a guided tour of the archaeological site, and time to explore highlights like El Castillo and the Sacred Cenote. Many tours also provide stops at a nearby cenote for a refreshing swim or a visit to the colonial town of Valladolid.
The Story of Mawimbi
The story of Mawimbi is the story of Onny and Carmelo’s journey around the world, and the beautiful home they built together in Isla Holbox, México over 25 years ago. When they’re not traveling to visit family and friends, or their favorite scuba diving locations, they live on premises here at Mawimbi.
Ornella & Carmelo
Ornella and Carmelo have journeyed all around the world. After visiting Seychelles, Maldives, Thailand, Caribbean, Greek Islands, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Botswana, they finally found their ultimate paradise and created a small tropical-style hideout.
When they began building Hotel Mawimbi in 1998, they were excited to bring to life all of the most beautiful experiences they enjoyed during their travels.
They used the magnificent local wood to build their dream home, and decorated the hotel with artistic crafts from local artisans, carefully blending modern amenities with authentic Méxican textures.
Many years later, Ornella and Carmelo still reside in this remote spot, enjoying the simplicity of island life and its wonderful nature. Sharing this experience with curious travelers has become their way of life.
